Before We Start a File
At minimum, we need the debtor's name and address history, the year, make, model, VIN, and plate, and a copy of the contract, title, or lien instrument showing the creditor's position. A signed service agreement or hold-harmless comes with the first order.
Beyond that, anything about where the unit actually sits helps: employer information, known driveways and garages, marina or boatyard names, commuter-lot habits, repair history, and any family address across the Massachusetts or Connecticut border. The tighter the picture, the faster the file moves.

Title & Recovery Notes
Title Forms: Vehicle titles, lien records, and repo-related paperwork run through the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles title forms division.
Repossession Affidavit: The DMV form attaches to the original certificate of title and cannot be used by itself to transfer ownership. Confirm the current version before filing.
Recording: Lien recording may be filed with the Town Clerk or Recorder where the debtor resides. The Uniform Commercial Code has applied here since July 1962.
Peaceful Recovery: Self-help recovery is generally permitted after default when it proceeds lawfully and without breach of the peace. Confirm the right process for the specific contract, collateral, and debtor facts.
Deficiency: A deficiency may be enforceable when the contract provides for it, and judgment notes are invalid. Verify sale and notice requirements before disposal.
Transfer Documents: Expect to need the title in the lienholder's name, a certified copy of the lien instrument, the affidavit, a notarized bill of sale, and a power of attorney. Confirm current DMV requirements before transfer.
Plates: Plates may follow the owner to another vehicle. Unassigned plates may need to be returned to the registry or the recovery agent.
